Charles J. Andres (1913 - 2008)
Charles J. Andres was born in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. He attended the Regis School and later the Severn School before being accepted to the United States Naval Academy in 1932. After being expelled from the Naval Academy '36, '37 twice for failing mathematics, he attended the Arts Students League in New York City. He later studied under Harvey Dunn who had studied under Howard Pyle. N.C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Harold Von Schmidt, Dean Cornwell, and many other famous artists. Andres became an illustrator before WWII, but enlisted in the Navy in 1940, and served in the North Atlantic before Pearl Harbor. During much of the war, he created illustrations for the Navy, including many covers for Sea Power magazine. After the war, he continued to work in and around New York before marrying Jane Bradford Sutton of Boston and Ogunquit, Maine and moving to Maine in 1950. During the 1950s and 1960s, he illustrated the covers for many paperback and hardcover books. He continued to work as a commercial illustrator until 1965 when he began teaching art at Berwick Academy, South Berwick, Maine. He continued teaching until 1981. The paintings in the gallery span work that he did in Harvey Dunn's class all the way through 1984 when he was still painting portraits on a commission basis.
