"Throw the Java" was inspired of course, by Star Wars -- The Return of the Jedi, George Lucas,  Producer, and the 1997 Microsoft "deal" to  "fix" Apple.  As the forces of the Wintel kereitsu prepare to make  resistance futile  ensuring  there is only one platform worth developing for, the determined but outgunned rebel forces at Sun Microsystems prepare their  final weapon.

Why Should You Care?

Regardless of what you read in the press,  Microsoft's "end game" presence today makes it difficult to provide new and better solutions to products for perhaps the next ten or more years.  We will all be stuck developing patches on patches to make the old DOS albatross with window dressing work! Code and solutions get uglier and more cumbersome!

Consider:

•  Microsoft does not innovate, their mediocre products are successful, but by that measure, there should only be McDonald's hamburgers for all appetites, and there should only be Wal-Mart stores for all purchases.  Lowest common denominator, right?

•  While Sun is trying to control the Java standard, unlike Microsoft's API's, all the  Java APIs are public.  A single company with vision (like Sun) needs to own Java to keep it from becoming a splintering standard like Unix. Sun will never take Microsoft's place, but wants  alternatives to a single monopoly approach.

• New R & D is being stifled because the only business plan you can now get funded  is one that assumes Microsoft buys you out. Otherwise, any successful future endeavor is doomed to failure by Microsoft putting you out of business.

•  

Q: How does throwing a coffee pot at a Death Star  help?

A: Only if it breaks the WINDOWS behind the emperor !

Another way to look at this... ever play Risk? You know at the end game there are only a few big players left and they beat eachother over the head until one emerges victorious uber alles! Sieg Heil! It is American to have competition in  a free market. Having one company own EVERYTHING is UnAmerican. Press the reset button!
